“I think this is Tyler’s ode to that project.”
Tyler, The Creator is a major fan of Pharrell Williams, long citing the Neptunes producer as a huge influence on his music. In a recent interview with Complex, DJ Drama explained how his own work on Pharrell’s 2006 mixtape, In My Mind (The Prequel), factored into Tyler’s latest Gangsta Grillz-inspired album, CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST.
“I think something that has to be discussed, [is that] there’s a generation of people that love the Gangsta Grillz series for what it was. And then there’s also another generation that pays a lot of homage to Pharrell’s In My Mind (The Prequel),” he said. “And Tyler is one of those [people]. Me and him discussed it [and] I see people discussing it. I think this is Tyler’s ode to that project, Pharrell’s In My Mind (The Prequel).”
In a recent video posted to social media, Tyler specifically gave Drama kudos for his work on In My Mind (The Prequel), which the DJ hosted ahead of the release of Skateboard P’s debut album, In My Mind.
“Shoutout rap music, I love it. DJ Drama, I love you,” said Tyler. “What you did for rap…phenomenal. From all the Waynes, all the Dedications. From the [Pharrell], the [In My Mind (The Prequel)] mixtape.”
Pharrell isn’t just a spiritual presence on the album. He also lays down a guest verse alongside Lil Uzi Vert on “JUGGERNAUT.” It’s his latest collaboration with Pharrell, following songs like “IFHY” and “Keep Da O’s.”
Tyler has frequently spoken about how Pharrell’s music impacted him, explaining last year that In My Mind inspired him to start Odd Future and even thanking him during his Grammys acceptance speech.
